How to style a midi skirt
A lesson in leg visibility when it's too cold to show skin
Good news for anyone who bought a midi skirt to wear during the winter of 2024 and has since worn it precisely once: they aren’t going anywhere, and we’ve got the outfit formulas to easily make it part of your regular rotation.
What exactly is a winter-ready midi skirt? Any mid-length skirt that is fabricated in a heavier fabrication (often wool, cashmere or knit of some kind) — making it more structured than the floaty silks, cottons, linens and organza chiffons that make summer midi skirts so effortless to style. Think: school uniform meets Ralph Lauren meets nunnery chic. Think: endless opportunities to get a little subversive elsewhere in your outfit. As with all style, it’s the contradictions and the tensions that make an outfit interesting.
From a proportion and styling perspective, the way to wear a midi skirt is to avoid showing too much skin on the lower leg. Yes, it’s practical (being warm is chic!) but a no-skin approach to styling your midi is also more modern. The exception to the rule is if you’re styling with a sock, in which case a little leg between skirt hem and sock looks cool. But, if this is too ‘street’ for you, a stocking gets you a slightly more classic look. We’re not always big on rules, but these are our guidelines for anyone seeking them!
With the skin ratio in mind, we’ve compiled four outfit formulas below, all loosely based on what is happening south of your skirt hem (aka your footwear choice!).
If a riding boot is your thing
If you own both a winter midi skirt AND a round-toe knee high length riding boot (and both are going unworn), this combo is your home base for the next couple of months. Work appropriate (sans cap), comfortable, and the contrast of a fuller midi skirt and a sturdy flat boot really work.

A sneaker + sock combo
Go for a cosy knit sock amd a slim, low profile sneaker and we’ll endorse the slice of skin on display. This reads as more of a street vibe. If you’re after a more sleek one, opt for a slinky/sheer sock instead.

This is a more refined way to wear your midi skirt in winter, no matter how casual your top half is. Two different looks below: a more northside / west end girl vibe, and one for our girls who visit Alberts / Margaret on the reg, hehe (we are both, we love both).

With your flats
Paired with your flats — ballet flats, what have you — the key is to incorporate something on the leg. A sock here is the more modern take. A cashmere sock or similar will work best with a flat with more structure. A stocking is a more classic take on the midi skirt for winter, but needn’t just be a black 40 denier. Branch out into a thicker stocking, maybe a grey knit pair to really dial up the scholastic/uniform vibe of it all. A+!
