OUTFITS: Five style formulas for spring
We put our outfit ideas to the test and rediscover something lost in the process.
It’s easy to fall into a predictable style pattern, especially when your day-to-day life feels somewhat predictable. It’s not that we’re against the idea of having a ‘uniform’, but we do believe there’s power in personalising it so you can feel like yourself (in fact, we wrote all about this for Broadsheet earlier this year).
The thing about ‘personalisation’ is that it’s a fluid notion. As people, we’re changing all the time; our circumstances are not static and our style is not some immovable thing we have to chain ourselves to. But, somewhere in the busyness of life, we can occasionally find our sleeve caught in the door, so to speak.
In other words, shit happens and we get stuck in a style rut.
Now, this isn’t exactly a catastrophe, in the grand scheme of things, but if you’re here we take it that, like us, you have more than a mild interest in fashion and recognise its power to make you feel a certain way.
So, how do we avoid getting caught in a sartorial undertow of our own making? How do we find our way back to feeling that delightful rush of excitement and energy that comes with putting together an outfit that’s just the right kind of you?
As we’ve been navigating big changes in our own lives, we’ve sought ways to look at our wardrobes anew in the hopes we might fall in love with getting dressed again. Our solution has been to find an image of an outfit we love and recreate it using what we already own, as best we can. It’s such a simple exercise but always yields results! We’ve affectionately dubbed this our “homework” and we hope you’ll join us in it, too. You can see our interpretations from this week’s homework further down this post.
Here’s how it will work:
Each week, we’ll share an outfit reference to our Instagram for you to try at home. You can DM us your versions and we’ll share to our stories (only with your permission, of course).
