Outfits: What to wear with your jacket this winter
Six style formulas to suit this season's outerwear heroes.
Hear that? It’s the sound of the coats and jackets of southern Australia smugly preparing for another winter reigning supreme over every other item in our wardrobes. Good for them.
Outerwear does a lot of heavy lifting for your overall style. Typically, we buy fewer coats and jackets than, say, t-shirts, which means they need to work twice as hard and look twice as good. No pressure, then.
This week, we break down six style formulas to suit the new outerwear heroes we’re loving for this season.
In this week’s newsletter, you’ll find outfit ideas (+ plenty of shoppable links) for:
The Car Coat (aka the new trench)
The Plaid Blazer
The Utility Spray Jacket
The Tailored Wool Bomber
The Suede Jacket
The Patent Trench
The vibe here (as with all our recommendations) is wearability and comfort, with just the right amount of casualness. Styled and considered, but not stuffy or formal. Interesting without being too challenging (because life is hard enough!).
See below for inspo.
Because so many of you asked us how to incorporate a) more colour and b) more layers into your everyday outfits, Soph has also added options for both to each outfit below.
The layer (which we dub the ‘unnecessary layer’) is the real key to unlocking the ‘styled’ component we’re aiming for. Soph has promised me she will do a little masterclass on how to style the ‘unnecessary layer’ without “feeling like a knob” (her words) on our IG soon, so keep an eye out. In the meantime, you can browse below for ideas.
Now, let’s get warm!
The Car-Trench Coat Hybrid
A trench is undeniably chic, but sometimes it feels like a lotta fabric. A car coat is a more understated, cleaner, and less bulky option. The fact they’re now having a moment feels like an inevitable evolution of the cleaner lines we’ve seen crop up on lightweight jackets over the last few months.
Like a trench, the car coat gives off major incognito chic energy. Invest in a neutral option, but break it up with a key block colour — either as your ‘unnecessary layer’ or as an accessory (e.g. a cap). A perfect runaround outfit if ever we saw one.
